Proposed Pigsdon Quarry Extension

Welcome to our consultation pages about proposals to extend Pigsdon Quarry, a gritstone quarry operated by E&JW Glendinning Ltd (‘Glendinning’).

Pigsdon Quarry is situated in a rural setting surrounded by agricultural land, with scattered farmsteads and dwellings lying in the general vicinity. The closest dwellings to the current proposals are those at Moreton Pound and Lower Lopthorne Farm to the south, Lopthorne Farm to the northwest and Rhude Farm to the west.

Pigsdon Quarry extracts stone from the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian) fine sandstone which yields a nationally significant high specification polished stone value (PSV) gritstone for use as an aggregate suitable for high skid resistant road surfaces. The quarry is the only workedsource of this high specification PSV within the southwest of England and its aggregate is used by asphalt manufacturers throughout Cornwall, Devon and Somerset for road surfacing. Building stone for decorative and hedging purposes is also extracted from the quarry, serving markets throughout North Cornwall and Devon. Some materials are also processed to produce construction aggregates and fills.

Glendinning is proposing to extend Pigsdon Quarry to ensure that the existing planning consent can be fully implemented and to safeguard the life of the quarry for many years to come. This will sustain the economic benefits it brings and the jobs that it creates. Pigsdon Quarry contributes £1.1 million a year to the Westcountry economy from the procurement of local goods and services.

A planning application is currently being prepared to extend the quarry’s extraction area into two fields to the west of the consented area where there are further gritstone deposits, with the placement of overburden from the quarry extension and the remaining consented fields on three fields further westwards. Once ready, the planning application will be submitted to Cornwall Council for determination.
